| She also has 37 years of Equine Management Experience. Well...how to make a long story short. I first heard about therapeutic riding before undergrad at UGA. My 16 y/o cousin had been in a really bad auto accident and had been thrown from a jeep breaking his back. He was told he would never walk again. But God and the PTs had other plans for him. The horseback riding worked to repair damaged muscles ... Read Morelike nothing else. He still shows at team roping now and has an 80 acres farm himself with his wife and 3 beautiful children. I became inspired and once I could not be a Vet due to allergies & asthma I got at 21, I had to rethink the life plan. So, while pursuing an undergrad in Clinical Social Work I did some research about the program at Shepard Spinal Center. Unfortunately, could not do an internship at that program because only PTs and OTs did it. In grad school at USC in the MSW program, I researched using horses to work with kids and do psychotherapy. Kids like it because it is more like recreation than boring old talk therapy.I lost Dad to cancer in 1999. Before he died, he encouraged me to go ahead and buy some land pursuing my dream of working with horses and kids who had emotional and physical challenges. I used the money he left me to put a down payment on the land and moved from the city to the stix in 2000. I had horses and was certified to do Equine Assisted Psychotherapy as the Mental Health Practitioner in 2001 through EGALA. I got involved with NARHA in 2002 and took classes to do therapeutic riding. Also, in 2002 I had students, borders and became incorporated. I did some horse shows for PR and have had several articles by local papers. Now I am working on my 501c3 paperwork to enable me to have grant funding to expand the program to serve kids and families without insurance. I have been in the field of Clinical Social Work for 16 years and had the business for 7. All the horses used for therapeutic services are Tennessee Walking Horses ranging in age from 3-26. I use them for their intelligence and calm personalities. I began riding at the age of 7 y/o and cannot imagine my life without horses. Walking horses are so much more fun than the Saddlebreds I began riding as a child.I also show Tennessee Walking horses in the light shod and plantation division. Horses are uniquely qualified to read emotion and produce healing even in those of us who compete and/or ride for pleasure but also for those coming in for services. This happens in a way no other therapy does. We can often save you more than the cost of other private therapist. Our results are quicker and we succeed where traditional therapy has faild. We also have The capacity to bill private insurance, contract and self pay. So why not call for an appointment today?
